JI Announces Nationwide Protest Against Rising Electricity Prices

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has taken a bold step by announcing plans for a nationwide protest on January 17, demanding a reduction in electricity prices. The party chief, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, made this announcement during a press conference in Lahore, where he criticised the government for its inaction amidst the closure of Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

Concerns Over Economic Hardships and Rising Prices

Hafiz Naeem highlighted the pressing concerns regarding the economic challenges faced by the public, particularly the failure to reduce electricity bills despite the shutdown of IPPs. He pointed out that while the IPPs are closed, electricity bills have not decreased, adding to the burden on the public. Moreover, he drew attention to the increasing prices of petrol and essential food items, which have continued to rise unchecked, exacerbating the financial strain on citizens.

Call for Government Accountability and Support for Agriculture

The JI leader questioned the government’s handling of the agricultural sector, particularly the pricing of sugarcane and wheat, which are facing significant production losses due to unregulated pricing. He urged the government to implement support programmes for these crops to prevent further losses in the agricultural sector. Additionally, Hafiz Naeem expressed concerns about the rising cost of education, highlighting the government’s diminishing role in providing affordable education and the potential impact on socio-economic disparities.

Political and International Issues Addressed

On a political front, Hafiz Naeem called for an end to military interference in politics, criticising both ruling parties and the opposition for their ties with the military establishment. He also shed light on Karachi’s political instability exacerbated by external influences. Addressing international issues, he strongly condemned Israel’s actions in Palestine, accusing the country of genocide with the support of the United States. Moreover, he advocated for peace talks with Afghanistan to ease regional instability in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In conclusion, Hafiz Naeem urged the government to prioritize national unity and tackle the urgent issues of economic collapse, political instability, and international relations to ensure a brighter future for the country.
