Urgent Call to UN for Implementing Kashmir Resolution
ISLAMABAD: The Jammu Kashmir Salvation Movement (JKSM) Chairman, Altaf Ahmed Bhat, has issued an urgent plea to the United Nations to fulfill its commitment by implementing the historic resolution that recognizes the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Cry for Justice
In a statement released on Saturday, Bhat emphasized the critical need for the international community, especially the United Nations, to take immediate action to address the Kashmir dispute in line with its resolutions. He highlighted the ongoing human rights violations in Illegally Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), noting the severity of the situation that has plagued the region since 1947.
Desperate Times in Kashmir
Bhat underscored the decades of violence, oppression, and state-sponsored terrorism endured by the people of Kashmir at the hands of Indian forces. He painted a grim picture of the region, describing it as a battleground where innocent lives are lost daily, condemning India’s actions in systematically altering the demographic composition to marginalize the Muslim majority.
The Harsh Reality
Since August 5, 2019, following the revocation of Articles 370 and 35A, Jammu and Kashmir have witnessed a staggering toll of 955 killings, 2,455 cases of torture, and 25,591 civilian arrests. The destruction of 1,125 structures has uprooted families, exacerbating the crisis in the region. The dire statistics include 72 widowed women, 196 orphaned children, and 134 women subjected to heinous crimes like gang rape or molestation, highlighting the urgent need for global intervention.
Altaf Ahmed Bhat reiterated JKSM’s steadfast belief in a UN-supervised plebiscite as the sole peaceful and viable resolution to the Kashmir conflict. He urged the United Nations to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities by ensuring the implementation of its resolutions and granting the people of Kashmir the right to determine their political destiny.
