The proposal, crafted by the Punjab Home Department, is currently pending final approval from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. A preliminary evaluation conducted by the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) uncovered that the collective annual energy expenses for the 43 jails have ballooned to an alarming Rs4.5 billion.
Despite this staggering figure, the anticipated expenditure of transitioning these correctional facilities to solar power falls below the aggregate yearly utility bills, rendering this eco-friendly investment a financially prudent choice in the long term. According to the NRTC’s assessment, the conversion to solar energy across all 43 jails necessitates an estimated investment of roughly Rs4.35 billion.
The phased execution of this green energy initiative is poised to yield a substantial 60% reduction in electricity costs, offering enduring fiscal respite. Projections indicate that the initial investment will be recuperated within a span of three years, transforming the jails into self-sustaining entities in terms of energy consumption and alleviating the strain on the provincial exchequer.
