Supreme Court Notice to Pervez Elahi in Deputy Speaker Ruling Case

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has recently issued a notice to former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, reopening a case related to a controversial ruling made by the provincial assembly’s former deputy speaker, Dost Muhammad Mazari. This notice came as part of a review filed by former CM Hamza Shahbaz, who challenged the court’s previous verdict that nullified the deputy speaker’s ruling. During the hearing, Justice Aminuddin Khan raised questions about the relevance of the case, while Hamza Shahbaz’s counsel, Haris Azmat, argued for its significance based on previous notices issued by the constitutional bench. Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar specifically inquired about Elahi’s representation in the case, noting his status as a respondent.

Elahi to be Indicted on Jan 7 in Graft Case

In a separate development, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) recently indicted seven accused in a corruption reference related to development projects, summoning Punjab’s former chief minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, on January 7 for indictment in the case. The court issued a written order regarding the indictment of Khan Bhatti and others, highlighting the unique circumstances of this case. While all accused are typically indicted at the same time, the court found it challenging due to Bhatti’s previous absence on medical grounds and Elahi’s request for a medical exemption from a recent hearing. However, in the interest of justice, the court decided to indict the present accused individuals and will address Elahi’s indictment in a subsequent hearing. Muhammad Khan Bhatti, Khalid Mehmood Chatha, Asif Mehmood, Naeem Iqbal, Muhammad Asghar, and Asad Ali were all indicted, with Pervaiz Elahi scheduled for indictment on January 7.
