The Sindh Government Unveils Malir Expressway Project in Karachi
The Sindh government has taken a significant step towards easing traffic congestion in Karachi by opening a partial 9.1-kilometre section of the Malir Expressway. This new expressway, a part of a larger 39-kilometre project set to be completed in 2025, aims to provide a direct connection to key industrial zones and alleviate the strain on the city’s existing road network.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), who was joined by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and other senior PPP officials. The event marked the official opening of the expressway, which stretches from Qayyumabad to Shah Faisal and has been aptly named the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Expressway in honor of the late PPP leader.
A Boon for Karachi’s Infrastructure
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah lauded the Malir Expressway as the largest public-private partnership infrastructure project in both the province and the country. With an estimated total cost of around 55 billion rupees, the Sindh government has contributed approximately 32 billion rupees, while commercial banks, development finance institutions, and the public-private partnership have jointly funded the remaining 23 billion rupees.

Once fully operational, the 39-km stretch of the Malir Expressway will provide an alternative route to Shahrah-e-Faisal and connect to the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) near Kathore.
