Protest at Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly
In a historic move, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly recently passed a resolution demanding the immediate withdrawal of verdicts announced by military courts. The resolution, presented by PTI MPA Abdul Salam Afridi, emphasized the importance of a transparent trial as a fundamental right of every citizen under the Constitution and law.
The resolution highlighted the detrimental impact of sentencing through military courts, stating that it not only undermines justice but also deprives citizens of their basic rights. Furthermore, it condemned the unconstitutional and biased decisions of military courts, calling for their immediate reversal to uphold the principles of justice and human rights.
IGP Briefing and Parliamentary Decision-making
Following a briefing by the K-P inspector general of police on the law and order situation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Speaker Babar Salim Swati clarified that parliament will now play a crucial role in determining the necessity of military deployment or action. The speaker emphasized the significance of seeking input from officials of the 11 Corps to make informed decisions regarding security measures.
During the session, various suggestions were provided by provincial ministers and assembly members, highlighting the importance of collaborative decision-making in ensuring the safety and security of the region. Speaker Swati underscored the role of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as a “buffer zone” and praised the commendable efforts of the police and Counter Terrorism Department in maintaining law and order.
Opposition member Ahmad Kundi expressed appreciation for the inclusion of opposition members in the session, emphasizing the public’s demand for safety and the need for transparent discussions to address pressing issues. The session also featured a comprehensive report on law and order by Jails IG Akhtar Hayat Gandapur, fostering a productive dialogue on the current situation and potential solutions to enhance security measures in the region.
