Defence Minister Questions PTI’s Sincerity in Negotiations with Government
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has raised concerns about the sincerity of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the upcoming negotiations with the coalition government. In a recent interview, he expressed doubts about the PTI’s sudden shift in approach, describing their willingness for dialogue as a “complete U-turn.”
The remarks from Asif came after National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq called for an in-camera meeting between the government and PTI committees, scheduled for January 2, 2025, to address the ongoing political tensions in the country.
Asif’s Scepticism
Asif reiterated his scepticism about the motives of the PTI leadership, stating that he does not see sincerity in their approach. While he acknowledged the importance of negotiations, he emphasized the need for caution on the part of the ruling coalition.
Inclusive Talks
The defence minister also called for inclusive talks involving all power centres in the country, including the military, judiciary, politicians, media, and bureaucracy, to resolve the existing challenges. He highlighted the significance of bringing together these key stakeholders to address national issues effectively.
Warning to Negotiating Team
As negotiations between the government and PTI loom, Asif warned the government’s negotiating team to remain vigilant. He cautioned that PTI founder Imran Khan might attempt to “take advantage” during the talks, urging the team to be prepared for any potential tactics.
In the upcoming discussions, PTI is expected to push for a judicial probe into recent riots and crackdowns, as well as the release of political prisoners. The outcome of these negotiations could significantly impact the political landscape of Pakistan in the coming days.
