India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan in the aftermath of a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), that killed 26 tourists and injured 17 others, according to media reports. This attack marked the deadliest assault on civilians in the region since 2000. Some gunmen just opened fire on a group of visitors on Tuesday, which made everyone panic and the military got involved. Pahalgam, which is located 90 km from Srinagar, is a beautiful town that attracts thousands of tourists every year.
The people who died were mostly men from different parts of India and even one person from Nepal, including a navy officer. The ambulances took the bodies to Srinagar, while military helicopters searched the forested hills for the attackers. The Indian authorities started a huge search operation, and they even questioned some people they thought might know something.
The army said they killed two suspected fighters in another incident in the Uri sector and they are still looking for the attackers. There’s this new group called ‘The Resistance Front’ that said they were behind the attack, but no one knows for sure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were not happy and promised to make the attackers regret what they did. The situation got so serious that there were high-level meetings and even the Indus Waters Treaty got suspended. The media and social media in India blamed Pakistan right away, but no one officially said Pakistan did it. The story is still developing.
