Karachi Winter Rain: Temperature Drop and Citywide Impact
Karachi experienced its first winter rain, signaling the onset of a cold wave set to linger for a week. The city encountered light rain and drizzle late last night, causing a significant decrease in temperatures. Key areas like Gulshan-e-Maymar, Baldia Town, Orangi Town, North Nazimabad, and surrounding regions reported sporadic rainfall and light showers. Even the northern outskirts, including Hub Chowki, witnessed similar weather conditions. Central areas such as Guru Mandir, M.A. Jinnah Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Shahrah e Faisal, and Karsaz Road also saw drizzle, while localities like Dalmia, Shanti Nagar, Gulistan-e-Johar, and Scheme 33 experienced intermittent showers, leading to a chilly atmosphere.
Pakistan Meteorological Department predicts the cold wave will persist throughout the week, with light rain expected until Saturday morning. The rain provided some relief to Karachiites by lowering temperatures, offering a cooler climate after a prolonged warm spell. Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz mentioned that temperatures in Karachi could drop as low as 6°C, with the cold spell lasting about a week. While addressing speculations of Karachi breaking its historical low temperature record of 0°C from 1934, Sarfraz dismissed the possibility, ensuring the city wouldn’t surpass that milestone. The cold snap is anticipated to last one to two weeks, with daytime temperatures around 8-10°C and nighttime temperatures dropping to 2-4°C in certain areas.
Meteorological Insights and Safety Precautions
Sarfraz explained that cold winds from Quetta were moving toward Karachi, intensifying the nationwide chill. The temperature decline was attributed to a high-pressure system in the north, pushing cold air masses southward. Additionally, the meteorologist cautioned about foggy conditions in the mornings, potentially disrupting air and road travel. He advised the public to take necessary precautions while driving in fog and stay updated on weather forecasts before commuting. Sarfraz assured that the Meteorological Department is closely monitoring the situation and will offer regular updates. Citizens are advised to stay safe, warm, and vigilant throughout the ongoing cold wave.
